Hunedoara, Romania – April 27, 2024
On April 21st, 2024 Adriana, Dan and I left Oswego, NY and flew to Romania. After traveling for many hours we finally arrived in Bucharest (Optopeni), Romania on the 22nd of April. Adriana and I headed to the city of Onești with her sister and brother-in-law who met us at the airport and Dan stayed with his biological father’s family in Bucharest.
On April 27th, 2024 we left Onești and headed for Bucharest, Romania to pick up Dan. After getting Dan, we headed toward Hunedoara and arrived there that evening.
We stayed at a pension named “Pensiunea Krystinne”; a Romanian pension is basically a large house that was designed to be a mini hotel. Adriana and I have stayed at many pensions in Romania and they have all been pretty much the same. One of the things I enjoy when staying at these pensions is having a beer or two on the balcony with my brother-in-law. Our balcony didn’t have a great view but the experience was nice nevertheless. I assume the pool and hot tub were empty due to the cold weather.
One of the beers I tried while there was a beer from the Czech Republic called “Budweiser”. When I drink beer I want it to taste like beer and not like the watered down stuff we get in the U.S., the Czech “Budweiser” did not disappoint. I found this beer yesterday here in New York at a Wegmans grocery store and it was being sold as “Czechvar” beer. It could be my imagination or I’m just not remembering things as they actually were, but the American version has a little bit of a different taste than the European version of this beer.
The next morning all seven of us headed to the Corvin Castle. So far I have been to three castles in Romania and I have to say that the Corvin Castle is the most interesting of them. Peles Castle and Bran Castle are worth visiting but Corvin is my favorite out of the three. The photo below is the entrance to the castle grounds.
The center of the castle below.
Just a random picture from outside of the castle. The walkway is much higher than it appears in the picture.
The coolest rain gutter downspouts I have ever seen below.
A picture from the tallest tower in the castle.
Some random interior pictures from the castle.
There’s a lot more to see at Corvin Castle and you can get lost exploring everything. If you’re ever in Romania and can only visit one castle, Corvin Castle should be the one to visit. After we visited the castle we ate a late lunch at the restaurant located near the parking lot for the castle, the food was good and not too expensive. Our nephew and his girlfriend left our traveling party after we ate to go back to Brașov and we headed toward the Maramureș area of Romania, which I will post about next.
